Five quick tips to increase your Vertical Jump…

So you are a good athlete but would like to jump a little higher. Wouldn’t we all! Sports today is such a highly competitive field that the games are not decided by a matter of inches. The ability to dominate your opponent on the field or court because of a big vertical leap is a reality. So whether you are looking for volleyball scholarships, basketball scholarships or football scholarships here are a few vertical jump tips.

1) Strength- you must have a core base of strength to work off of. The space shuttle doesn’t launch into outer space with 50 horse power. So you must train on your power movements which include squats, deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts.

2) Flexibility- now that you’ve become much stronger from all of the power lifting you must retain your flexibility. As you do a lot of power lifting your hamstrings, glutes and quads will become very tight. It is important to properly stretch these muscles

3) Plyo’s- well to put it simply you must jump. Lifting alone will not do it. You can have a very strong base but also be very slow. You must awaken these muscles by doing fast reactive exercises. Box jumps, knee ups, Russian freezes and full jumps with a full reach are all great exercises.

4) Core- you must have a strong core, period. That means abs and lower back. There are a million different ab exercises select a few and hit them hard, use weight and high reps. Lower back stick to hyperextensions and good mornings(either seated or standing). You must have a solid core if you think you’re going to leave the ground. It’s often overlooked but vital to jumping.

5) Cardio- if you are overweight you will not be a good leaper. Diet and cardio are the only way to lose weight. However, don’t jog ten miles a day and expect to remain powerful. Use sprint intervals, shuttle runs, plyometrics and resistance jumping or sprinting.

This is a very quick intro to the world of the vertical jump. We will continue to write more detailed articles with specific exercises and weight and rep suggestions. Understand that it is not just a genetic gift to be a good leaper. You can definitely work and improve on your jumping ability but it takes time and dedication.

What sport offers the most Division 1 Athletic Scholarships for men?

Well, the obvious is football scholarships but what sport is two and three?

1) Football Scholarships per D1 School 85

2) Hockey Scholarships per D1 School 18

3) Basketball Scholarships per D1 School 13

Granted, there are less hockey teams than other sports but still the most obvious choice would have been baseball.  It is our national pastime.

What should your Soccer Recruiting video consist of?

We will simplify this for you most videos should not last longer than five minutes and should be accompanied by a letter that best explains why you deserve a soccer scholarship.

-show games of high school opponents

-show games of club opponents

-good to display major tournaments you played in

-display your passing, speed, footwork, header work and leg strength

We actually viewed a video from a kid in Costa Rica that showed him running the forty yard dash, kicking to marked spots on a goal, volleying with a partner and heading skills and the scouts we spoke to raved about it. The video contained zero game content and he went on to get offers for multiple soccer scholarships.

So make it clean concise and accent your positives. It’s just one step in the athletic recruiting process.

Football Scholarships big vs. little…

College Football has three clear divisions. Football Bowl Subdivision which is your division One A. Then you have the Football Championship Subdivision which used to be Division One Double A. Finally you have Division Two and Division Three Football each of these divisions offer football scholarships in varying degrees.

The differences in the conferences regarding money, recruiting and facilities in gigantic. So when Appalachian State beat Michigan that was a huge upset.

For the smaller schools it’s a home run to play the Division One teams because it’s a huge payday for a small school. The revenue is often several hundred thousand dollars and the publicity is also very important for these smaller universities.

What about the gain for the large school? Essentially they believe it’s a week off. They get to rest some starters and heal some injuries. But the downside is huge because they are expected to win. These D-1 schools hand out football scholarships to athletes that may never play on there respective team but could start and be stars at these schools. Another interesting downside for the large schools is that a victory against a school that doesn’t offer football scholarships does not count as a win toward the minimum six games necessary to qualify for bowl eligibility.

Attend tournaments for Volleyball Scholarships

Recently the Dave Mohs Volleyball Tournament took place in Orange County California. We just wanted to give you an idea of the exposure and amount of talent of just one team that was present and they weren’t even from California. As RecruitCity has noted before these tournaments and the internet are the places to be seen to get volleyball scholarships. Notre Dame High of Scottsdale, AZ had a solid semifinal showing but what was remarkable was the talent that got volleyball scholarships on there team. Two girls have committed to full ride scholarships at Lehigh and Duquesne while two others are still working out details on volleyball scholarships with other colleges. Not bad when four girls are getting financial assistance when there are only six on the court at a time.

LT giving out Football Scholarships!!!

LaDainian Tomlinson, the 28 year old star running back of the San Diego Chargers has had a tough start to the 2007 NFL season but it doesn’t let him forget where he came from. He was raised in Waco, Texas by a single mom who had difficult financial means. His athletic ability and hard work enabled him to receive a football scholarship to San Diego State. He has since become a star athlete and one of the most highly sought after for endorsements. It is estimated that he takes in around eight million dollars a year in salary and endorsements and he isn’t afraid to give some back. He has set up a “Touching Lives Foundation” that holds football camps and gives out 25 one thousand dollar football scholarships to its attendees.
